Supporting Your Health Through Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are essential for maintaining your vision and detecting potential eye health issues early when they’re easier to manage.

At Glow, caring for your eyes goes well beyond checking your prescription—it’s about tailoring solutions to your unique needs, preferences, and life.

Our eye exams begin with a detailed intake process, during which we take the time to truly get to know you. By understanding your health history, lifestyle, vision concerns, and any family history of eye conditions, we believe we can find solutions to your trickiest concerns.

And if you’re interested in contact lenses—even if you’ve been told your prescription is tough to fit—we’re here to help. Our knowledge extends to challenging prescriptions and specialty contacts so everyone can experience the vision and comfort they deserve.

How Often Do You Need an Eye Exam?

The frequency of your eye exams depends on your unique needs.

If you wear contact lenses, have a high prescription, or manage certain eye conditions, we often recommend annual or more frequent check-ins. For others, every 2 years might suffice.

During your exam, we focus on more than just your prescription. We start by learning your health history and vision goals and discuss any specific concerns that brought you to us.

We test your visual acuity and assess how your eyes work together. We may also test for signs of certain eye diseases, which can develop even before you notice symptoms.

Common Eye Issues an Eye Exam Can Help With

We want you to live well and see well. That means doing everything in our power to give you crisp, clear, comfortable vision. Eye exams are also designed to catch the earliest signs of eye diseases before they progress.

Refractive Errors (Nearsighted, Farsighted, & Astigmatism)

Refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, affect how light focuses on the retina, impacting how you see.

Nearsightedness makes distant objects appear blurry, while farsightedness can make nearby objects harder to see. Astigmatism creates distortion at all distances due to irregularly shaped corneas.

Having the right prescription glasses or contacts helps you see clearly and comfortably all day. But if you’re interested in going glasses-free and contact-less, ask us about a laser eye surgery consultation.

For people with diabetes, regular eye exams are vital for monitoring and managing the effects of this condition on your vision. Diabetes can lead to a range of eye problems, including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts, which can worsen over time if left unchecked.

Keeping up with your eye exams when you’re living with diabetes allows Dr. Jaya to detect any early signs of damage, provide timely treatments, and help preserve your vision for the long term.

If you’re in your 40s or 50s and you’ve found yourself increasing the text size on your phone or computer lately, or perhaps you’re holding books at arm’s length to read them, you might be experiencing a natural eye change called presbyopia.

Presbyopia is a completely normal part of life. It happens when the lens in your eye gradually loses flexibility, making it harder to focus on objects up close. The good news is that there are plenty of solutions, from a new prescription to contact lenses.

As with all our services, we’ll investigate your concerns thoroughly to determine if anything else may be contributing to your vision changes.

Dry Eye

It’s estimated that more than 90% of Albertans are living with dry eye disease. If you’re waking up with gritty, tired eyes, or ending the day rubbing those delicate eyes, we can help.

Our eye exams can uncover signs of dry eye. If your symptoms are mild, we’ll typically recommend artificial tears and warm compresses to help.

If your symptoms are more severe or worsening, we’ll recommend a full dry eye consultation to dig deeper into the underlying causes.

Eye strain can significantly impact daily life, whether it’s caused by increased screen time, prolonged reading, or other factors. Eye strain can include not only eye discomfort, but also neck and shoulder pain, headaches, and blurred vision,

We can recommend tailored treatments or suggest lifestyle adjustments, such as taking regular screen breaks, using blue light-filtering lenses, or incorporating eye exercises into your workday, to help reduce discomfort and protect your vision.

Troubling headaches or migraines? With a wholistic perspective, we’ll explore the link between vision and headaches during your eye exam.

We may prescribe Avulux lenses to manage migraine symptoms and potentially help improve your quality of life.

Specialty Contact Lenses at Glow

Fitting contact lenses requires a detail-oriented approach—especially if your eyes have unique needs. At Glow, we provide contact lens exams and fittings designed for your comfort, clear vision, and long-term eye health.

We’re experienced in fitting all types of lenses, including specialty options designed for specific challenges or conditions.

Here’s a look at some of the specialty contacts we offer:

  • Scleral Lenses: These larger lenses rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye), creating a tear-filled cushion over the cornea. They’re ideal for people with irregular corneas, due to conditions such as keratoconus or severe dry eye.
  • Ortho-k Lenses: These are worn overnight to gently reshape your cornea, offering clear vision without lenses during the day. They can be a great nonsurgical option for nearsightedness. We also provide ortho-k for nearsighted kids and teens for the purpose of preventing their vision from worsening.
  • Torics: Toric lenses are specifically designed for astigmatism, balancing curved and cylindrical prescriptions for crisp focus.
  • RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) Lenses: These durable, firm lenses deliver precise vision correction and are great for people with unique prescriptions or corneal challenges.
  • Aspheric Lenses: Designed to reduce distortions and improve focus, aspheric lenses offer sharper peripheral vision and enhanced clarity.
  • Myopia Control Contacts for Kids: Yes, kids can wear contacts! These specialized lenses can slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, helping to protect their eye health as they grow. Learn more

At Glow Optometry and Wellness, we’re passionate about helping you find contact lenses that meet your needs and fit comfortably, no matter your prescription.

Should I Get Daily Contacts?

Many of our patients love the convenience and hygiene advantages of daily contacts.

Since they’re worn once and discarded at the end of the day, there are no cleaning solutions or storage requirements. Their single-use design also reduces the risk of buildup, eye infections, or related complications, providing a safer and more convenient option for vision correction.

Whatever your vision needs, we’ll work hard to find the contact lenses that suit your life.
